By Bob Barber
I have just finished a book called “Family. Money. Five Questions Every Family $hould Ask About Wealth” by David Wills, Terry Parker, & Greg Sperry. It answers five questions to help readers navigate the common pitfalls of wealth and inheritance. Here are some impactful highlights from the book that I found thought provoking. I will include the five questions after the highlights.
- How a family handles money is a unique and integral part of each family’s culture. To create and pass on a Godly view of money requires a plan.
- Usually when a relative leaves an inheritance to a family member, they have the best intentions and love at the heart of the gift. But, there are so many challenges and dangers that can come with sudden lump sum inheritances, many times the gift turns into a curse if the heir is not prepared spiritually, emotionally, or with financial understanding.
- Maintaining healthy family relationships is more important than leaving a large financial inheritance.
- Many of the older generation find it difficult to have a frank discussion about money and inheritance with their family. The culture that they were raised in placed a taboo on discussing subjects such as your finances. So, rather that violate a perceived social standard, they never breach the topic.
The Five Questions
-
Who really owns the things you own?
-
What assets have been entrusted to your care?
-
When is it enough?
-
Where should it go in the end?
-
Why will your children’s children share your Family Stewardship Philosophy?
Would you like to discuss the above five questions with me? Are you confident your children are prepared to manage the resources you plan to pass on to them while they still carry out God’s plan for their lives? What will an inheritance accomplish in your children and grandchildren? Are they prepared to preserve, grow, and utilize wealth responsibly in their role as God’s stewards? I’ve had some great discussions with my family on these issues, and I would be happy to help you prepare for a discussion with your own family. Just call the office at 830-609-6986 and ask for an appointment with me to discuss “Family. Money.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row top=”20px” bottom=”10px”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1467298797615{padding-bottom: 25px !important;}”]

We All Have Different Gifts
God gives all of us different gifts and strengths to help one another. Some of us are teachers, doctors, nurses, carpenters or mechanics. Others are architects, artists, entertainers, pastors, engineers or protectors (police, fire, military). While others are veterinarians, managers, leaders and everything in between. And let’s not forget about some of the unappreciated jobs that are not in the limelight like those who maintain our homes, offices, automobiles, etc., who do the jobs that make life so much easier for us all. (more…)
Several months ago we bought some baseball caps to give away with our company name and logo on them. On the weekends I usually wear mine on one of my weekly visits to Lowe’s, McCoy’s or Home Depot, or down in Rockport fishing. I’m constantly asked, and I quote, “What is Wealth Management?” CIS staff members are getting the same question when they wear their caps. It is not a simple answer. Wealth Management cannot easily be defined in just one sentence because it is so complex. (more…)
Real estate, cars, bank accounts, savings, investments, businesses, mineral rights (oil and gas, water), food, shelter, clothing, smart phones, electronics, computers, jewelry, art, collectibles, people/children that have been entrusted to our care, spouse, employees, animals, environment and the whole earth… (more…)
After prayer and asking God to reveal His word, read the following passages one at a time and pull out the words and phrases from each verse that either describes a Christian or secular believer’s viewpoint. In many passages just write the opposite meaning of the word. Example: life/death, faithfulness/adultery, giving/selfishness. From the passages below you should be able to make a list of at least twenty differences to help you to see and understand the spiritual battle we all experience daily between viewpoints. (more…)
Why do you believe that God’s word says it is more blessed to give than receive?
When we are giving, who are we most like?
Over the years, and in increasing numbers, I have had clients contact me about an opportunity they have received for a fixed indexed annuity. These annuities are heavily marketed by mail, radio programs, and through free seminars at steak houses as the one-size-fits-all financial product for retirement income. I decided to share this article because there are important things to know about fixed indexed annuities before investing in them. I am not against all fixed indexed annuities. For many years I have placed a small portion of my clients’ investable assets in them if it was appropriate and fit their investment objective. But there are aspects related to fixed index annuities that concern me that I need to share.
THE DONOR ADVISED FUND
Last week I introduced a tool for leaving a financial legacy called a donor advised fund. I also shared three scenarios where a solution for leaving a financial legacy was needed. In all three of these scenarios, a donor advised fund may be used to more efficiently accomplish short and long term giving goals while creating a legacy of giving. Below, I are two examples that could work for the three scenarios I went over last week.
Do you want to leave a financial inheritance or a financial legacy? For what do you want to be remembered? For the temporal material possessions a financial inheritance could buy for your children? OR, the eternal value a financial legacy could provide for God’s Kingdom as well as to your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren?
