In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared the 3rd Sunday of every June as Father’s Day. This will be the second Father’s Day that I will be without my dad since his passing, and I miss him. I was very fortunate to have a dad that loved the Lord and me unconditionally. My dad never missed anything I was involved in. He played catch with me daily with a baseball, football or basketball, and was absolutely my best friend.
Unfortunately, I know from experience that many cannot say these kinds of nice things about their dad but wish they could. Nonetheless, one of the Ten Commandments is to “Honor your father and mother”(Exodus 20:12). This Father’s Day can be a healing process for many. As dads get older in life, they realize many of the mistakes they made in their younger years and wish they could have a ‘do over’ with their kids to make it right.
If your dad is still alive, don’t forgot to call him on Sunday, June 19th or better yet, go and see him and just spend some quality time with him.
For those of you that still have your children around, it is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day activities of life and lose sight of the important things. Father’s Day is a time to honor our dads, as well as I believe, the men who have been father figures to us. This is especially true for those whose biological father was never around, or lost in a tragedy. (more…)
