Over the past few years, stocks and bonds have seen a tremendous amount of day-to-day and month-to-month volatility. Volatility is the price an investor has to be willing to pay if they want long term growth, but many investors don’t realize, or forget this, when they actually experience volatility in their portfolio. Typically over time, the lower the volatility, the lower the return, and the higher the volatility, the higher the return.
We are now, once again, in a time of extreme volatility. One month your statement shows your account value is up, the next month it shows the value is down. Sometimes, this volatility can go on for several years. In the early 1970’s, the markets did this for 4-5 years before rallying for the next 7-8 years. I have a chart in my office showing all the different markets over 90 years and the many times the markets have gone sideways for 3-4 years in a row. I’m glad I get to look at this chart daily to remind me that what we are experiencing today is normal according to long term history. Those who threw in the towel during a sideways trend have always missed out on a following major rally in the markets for the next 4-5 years or longer.
Control What You Can, Especially Your Emotions
For many, with volatility comes stress. One of the ways to control your emotions during volatile markets is by working with volatility instead of against it! When markets are down, look at it as a buying opportunity just like you do when something goes “on sale” at the local department store. In a sideways market like we have been experiencing for some time now, this is a great opportunity to accumulate as many shares of good companies’ stocks as you can while they are flat or down. Then, when the markets rally someday, you will have bought at lower prices.
This is exactly the strategy Warren Buffett has been using for years, and he is one of the wealthiest men in the world. If you watch him, he always buys stocks during major dips when everyone else is following their emotions and getting out.

Looking for ideas to tell your mom “I Love You” this Mother’s Day? How about doing something unique and different from the standard card and flowers? What about giving toward a water well in an African village as a reminder of your mom’s provision for you growing up? Sponsor a child in a third world country in honor of her nurturing. Plant a tree that will be seen for generations, to memorialize that she has influenced the generations after her by raising her family.
Many times, the best gift we can give is ourselves. When I ask my mom what she wants as a gift for a special occasion, she always responds – “nothing”. I know that what she is really saying to me is “nothing material – just time with you!” Set aside a day and let your mom call the shots – shopping, gardening, putting together a puzzle, watching Hallmark movies – whatever she wants to do!
What if your mother is already gone this Mother’s Day? Why don’t you share some love with another mom you know? Make it a point to honor another woman in your life who has been a mother figure for you. Write a letter telling her of the impact she has had on you and take her to lunch to thank her. Or, what about encouraging a young mom in the midst of raising young ones who could use a card telling her that she’s doing a great job and her efforts bringing up the next generation of believers will go far in the Kingdom of God.
To all mom’s reading this – Happy Mother’s Day! You’ve given the greatest gift in the world to someone – the gift of life. Thank you.

“On May 1, 1865, freed slaves gathered in Charleston, South Carolina to commemorate the death of Union soldiers and the end of the American Civil War. Three years later, General John Logan issued a special order that May 30, 1868 be observed as Decoration Day, the first Memorial Day — a day set aside “for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land.”1
This event in 1865 memorializes those who paid the price for freedom by those who gained the most because of freedom. It illustrates and suggests that those who should observe Memorial Day are those who live in freedom.
One of the things I find most interesting in Texas is how many family or community cemeteries dot the landscape. Case in point, is the cemetery in the community I live in, which has a gravestone of a soldier who fought in the Civil War. I do not not know his name, rank or which side he fought for, but I am reminded that he fought a war that preserved and offered freedom to so many, then and now.
Therefore, on this Memorial Day, May 30th, let’s remember those who paid a great price for our freedom by not taking it for granted.

The month of May is an exciting time of many celebrations. Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and for many, Graduation Day for a child or grandchild from high school or college.

One of the nicest things you can give them is the gift of a college education. Today’s 529 qualified tuition plans serve as a tax efficient way to set up educational accounts for your children or grandchildren. While contributions to the plan may not be tax deductible, any growth in 529 accounts are tax deferred and distributions used solely for higher education expenses are tax exempt. Generally, this includes tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment required for attendance. Reasonable cost of room and board is also included as tax exempt distributions from a 529 plan if your child or grandchild is attending school at least half time.
